Biotech Regulation Online Clearinghouse Now Available
USDA, FDA, and EPA joined forces to launch a unified website for biotechnology regulation as part of an executive order to modernize the regulatory framework for agricultural biotechnology products.
The framework aims to cover the full range of plants, animals, and microorganisms derived from biotechnology. Each agency has regulatory programs to ensure health and environmental safety. The website acts as a comprehensive clearinghouse and simplifies information from each of the three regulatory agencies – almost like one-stop shopping for ag biotech products in terms of federal regulations. The goal is to improve transparency, predictability, coordination, and efficiency.
Details available on the site include what types of products can be made through biotechnology processes, the safety of currently available biotech products, and how each of the three agencies regulates biotechnology. The site also contains documents, additional resources, and specific laws.
“Agricultural biotechnology has been and will continue to be an essential tool in helping America’s farmers and ranchers feed, fuel, and clothe the world,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. “From producers to consumers, all Americans deserve a government that delivers science-based, common-sense regulations that foster innovation, conserve resources, and protect public health—especially when it comes to the food supply. The launch of this unified Biotechnology Regulation website is proof of President Trump’s commitment to provide the American people with sensible regulations in a clear and transparent manner.”
