  • ELD Deadline Approaching for AOBRD users

The deadline for trucks equipped with Automatic On-Board Recording Devices (AOBRDs) to switch to electronic logging devices (ELDs) is fast approaching, with AOBRD users required to make the switch by December 16th. Unlike other previous deadlines associated with the ELD, this deadline is not expected to be extended by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

When the ELD mandate went into effect in December 2017, motor carriers using AOBRDs before the final rule enactment date were grandfathered in for two years. AOBRDs were more basic forms of ELDs with looser technical specifications.

Any driver using an outdated AOBRD or ELD that is not fully compliant will be placed out of service for a minimum of 10 hours. If a vehicle is placed out-of-service for noncompliance and is dispatched again before a proper ELD is installed, fines can range from $1,000-10,000 or potentially higher.
