  • EPA Pick Confirmed; Farm Credit Pick Generates Controversy

The Senate voted 52-47 to confirm Andrew Wheeler as Secretary of the Environmental Protection Agency on February 28. AmericanHort supported Wheeler’s nomination, signing a support letter in January addressed to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. More than 30 other organizations also signed the letter.

Wheeler paid a visit to McCorkle Nurseries, Inc., in February, to highlight efforts on WOTUS as well as infrastructure and a new nutrient reduction policy. McCorkle Nurseries, an AmericanHort Premium member, is located in Dearing, Georgia. Chris McCorkle also serves on the Board of Directors at AmericanHort.

Meanwhile, AmericanHort joined several other agricultural groups signing a letter opposing an appointment to the Farm Credit Administration board of directors. Nominee Rodney K. Brown has demonstrated, over his career, a lack of support for the Farm Credit system, an important source of credit for many in the horticulture industry.
