Recognition for AmericanHort Advocacy Team
The new year began with some welcome recognition for our efforts and our team. First, the cover story of the January issue of GrowerTalks Magazine showcased the efforts of our Washington, DC staff team. Check it out!
Secondly, our very own research and science programs director, Jill Calabro, PhD, was presented the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) President’s Five Star Performance Award at the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) Winter Reception at MANTS 2020. She was one of five winners initially recognized at the annual OAN convention in November, but the reception allowed OAN the opportunity to present the award to her personally.
The President’s Five Star Performance Award winners are personally chosen each year by that year’s outgoing president of the Oregon Association of Nurseries. The purpose of the awards is to recognize outstanding service to the association that the president finds personally significant. The association’s outgoing president, Mike Hiller of KCK Farms LLC in Dayton, Oregon, said he wanted to recognize Calabro’s work at AmericanHort, particularly when it comes to addressing the threat of boxwood blight.
“It’s important for the nursery industry to get ahead of boxwood blight,” Hiller said. ” Jill has been tremendously helpful as the Oregon Association of Nurseries has worked to address this difficult pathogen, which poses a threat to not just the health of plants, but to the businesses who grow them and the markets they serve. She participated in all of our meetings on the topic, and her expertise was essential. She has been and I’m sure will continue to be a fantastic resource for our growers, and members of the industry overall.”
A very well-deserved congratulations, Jill!
